SAM Mouldings has been awarded £200,000 as an interest free loan towards the cost of its new biomass woodchip boiler with heat exchanger and steam turbine by the Carbon Trust. The equipment will help us burn our waste MDF dust and chippings from the manufacturing process to generate electricity and heat.
The new turbine will can generate over 3million kWh per year, displacing all our grid electricity needs and producing a saving of around £230,000 per year.
As the turbine can generate more electricity than the company needs, we can sell the surplus to the grid generating a further £33,000 revenue stream, and all from our primary waste product !
Mark Kirkpatrick our Operations Manager said: “We’re well on our way to being self sufficient in term of electricity generation and making significant cost and carbon savings as a result. I would recommend and company considering renewable technology as a way of mitigating long term energy costs to take advantage of the Carbon Trust’s scheme.”
